MRK has joined MWA

The Megunticook RiverKeepers (MRK) recently joined forces with the Megunticook Watershed Association (MWA) — press release here — and thus the RiverKeepers organization has dissolved. This website is now an archive documenting our 2025 campaign, which concluded with Camden citizens voting decisively to remove the Montgomery Dam, restore the river’s original harbor falls outlet, and rebuild the Harbor Park seawall for better climate resistance and public access.

With the upcoming removal of the harbor dam and plans to remove Knox and Knowlton Dams in the works, the health and protection of the river environment is high on MWA’s agenda, and we encourage everyone to support the Association’s work: www.megunticook.org

Free the River!

What will it look like?

How much will it cost?

We’re here to answer your questions about the Montgomery Dam removal June ballot initiative language.

The goal of Megunticook Riverkeepers (MRK) is to mobilize public awareness and private support for improving the environment of the Megunticook River.

Removing Montgomery Dam will save tax dollars.

After years of study, the Megunticook River Citizens Advisory Committee (MRCAC) recommended that removing Montgomery Dam will allow for responsible stewardship of the Megunticook River and is the cost effective path forward for taxpayers.

Removing the dam will reduce flood threats to both public and private property.

Detailed studies have concluded that dam removal would lower water levels and create a more resilient buffer to uncertain future flow conditions in the river as flooding becomes more frequent in the coming years.

Removing Montgomery Dam will expand a corridor for fish and wildlife—between the mountains and the sea.

Removal of the Montgomery Dam presents an opportunity for us to renew ecological conditions that will allow fish and wildlife to repopulate and thrive.

“Removing Montgomery Dam is a proactive, sustainable, earth centric approach—one that benefits numerous species, including ourselves.”
